Filtering Capacitors/Modules to replace

  • A common issue with these power supplies is that the compact filtered power entry module often degrades over time[1]. The capacitors inside of it often explode, and leave a nasty smell, and goo around it. The codename of the module is "FN282-6-06" and is still available for purchase. [2]
  • The input module PCB has an X2 class 0.68 µF RIFA capacitor, the kind with the semi-transparent case that tends to crack, and allow moisture in. These kinds of capacitors, are recommended to be replaced in old gear. Note that this capacitor is 15mm wide, 31.5mm long, and the pin pitch is about 27.5mm. There's space enough for a couple mm wider or couple mm longer capacitor.
  1. The author of this article has seen this module fail on at least 3 devices, and also noticed other people online seeing the same failure: https://youtu.be/owhx7wW-mN8?si=VscQqoiZPaNYLUzT&t=416, https://www.eevblog.com/forum/reviews/phillipsfluke-pm2811-power-source/msg1582627/#msg1582627 At this point it is recommended to replace these on sight, and write the replacement date onto the modules.
