What Is the “Upper Layer”?
On modern iPhones with sandwich (two-layer) logic boards, the board is split into:
- Upper layer – CPU, NAND, Logic EEPROM
- Lower layer – Baseband, WiFi and NFC (in some models)
An upper-layer swap means transferring the entire top board from one device to another, usually to recover data or restore functionality when the upper layer is damaged.
