If you have the latest Xbox Wireless Controller, such as the one included with Xbox Series X|S, you’ll notice an additional button nested between the View button and the Menu button. That’s the Share button

The Share button makes it easy to record game clips and capture screenshots, so you can share your favorite moments with friends or other players.

Here’s what you can do with it.

Using the Share button

Capture

In a game:

  • A single press of the Share button takes a screenshot
  • Press and hold makes a game clip of what just happened

And, whether you’re in a game or not:

  • Double-pressing the Share button shows your recent captures so you can choose what to share next

Like the rest of your controller, the Share button  is customizable. In the console’s Xbox Accessories app, you can choose alternate actions for the Share button's press and hold behaviors:

  • Record what happened (creating game clips from recent events)
  • Take a screenshot
  • Start and stop recording

Share

Double-press the Share button to see your recent captures. From your console, you can share game clips and screenshots to your profile’s activity feed, clubs, and messages.

When you’re signed in to the Xbox mobile app, you can share from the console by selecting the Mobile option. This sends a notification of the capture to your device immediately. From here, you can share your captures anywhere in or outside Xbox that’s accessible from your phone, including Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and other social media services.

Remapping

To remap the Share button to a different function, you’ll need to create a profile in the Xbox Accessories app.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Some of the toggle options may differ from console to console or not be available depending on which Xbox you’re using, as different consoles support different features.
  • If you map an action to a controller and find that feature is not supported on the console or map a setup such as an HDMI-CEC action or use the button to launch a game that is not currently installed, you’ll receive an error notification when you press the newly mapped button.

Note The Xbox Accessories app comes pre-installed on Xbox consoles.

  1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide, select My games & apps > See all > Apps, and then choose Xbox Accessories.
  2. Select Configure under the controller you want to configure.
  3. Select the profile you want to configure, and then select Edit. (Select New profile to create a brand-new profile.)
  4. In the first dropdown list, you can choose how to remap the Share button in three different ways:
    • Share button, press. When chosen, you can remap what a single button press does with the Share button.
    • Share button, hold. When chosen, you can remap what a hold does with the Share button. A hold is about one-half of a second.
    • Share button, double tap. When chosen, you can remap what a double-tap does with the Share button.
  5. Under Map to (the second dropdown), choose what function the Share button will map to.

When you’re done, press the B button for your changes to take effect.
