Problem description
Display will intermittently flicker or completely lose picture and backlighting for seconds or minutes at a time. Eventually, display may not work at all, or will require a complete cool-down before functioning again. Power light on unit will often continue to illuminate while the picture remains dark.
Symptoms
- Display will intermittently flicker or completely lose picture and backlighting for seconds or minutes at a time. Eventually, display may not work at all, or will require a complete cool-down before functioning again.
- Power light on unit will often continue to illuminate while the picture remains dark.
Solution
Most often, the cause is failed DC filter capacitors for the 3.3V and the 1.8V voltage regulators on the main logic board. They are labeled as C80 and C83 and are rated for 100μF @ 16V, 105°C. Since these are the most common components to fail on these units, consider replacement with the best-quality capacitors available when performing any other board repair, especially if DC voltage readings are out of spec or inconsistent.
