The PS5 being relatively new hasn't shown its' true colors yet. That said there are some common failures starting to show. More information will be added as it is gathered.

Common PS5 Problems

Problem Solution

No Power At All

  • Check power supply is outputting 12v at PSU Connector on board
  • Check for shorts around rear of southbridge IC CXD90061GG
  • Plug your bench power supply into the 12v input pins. If you have no 300ma boot sequence, remove BIOS IC for 10-20 minutes completely from the board, resolder and retry. If still no change reprogram BIOS with a working digital edition copy of the BIOS (this will remove the ability to use a BDROM on disc editions)

Single Beep From PWRBTN Roughly Every 30 Seconds

  • Check fuse F7002 for continuity. If blown you may need to investigate why it went bad (possible short on nearby 5v-3.3v step down converter
  • Check for shorts on 5v-3.3v step-down converter (TLV62090RGTR) directly opposite F7002 (APU side). The capacitor and IC appear to be common failures
  • Check liquid metal for spills on and around the APU, as well as under the foam and gasket (Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdyVjvUjfXo - Credit TheCod3r)
  • Check for shorts around the capacitors at the back of the WiFi/Bluetooth module
  • Check for shorts around F7502 and F7003

No Display, TV detects a signal. HDMI port not physically damaged.

  • Try a new HDMI port before assuming the encoder (MN864739) is at fault, even if the pins feel solid.
  • If after an HDMI replacement you're still having the issue, look into possibly replacing the MN864739 encoder.

Blue Light of Death

  • Reinstall Operating System
  • Check for any capacitor shorts near F7501

  • Add washers to the APU bracket (this is nothing more than a bodge, you can do this to test the theory, but NEVER leave it like this. This is a bodge by amateur technicians and DIY'ers and should never be considered a long term solution! If this fixes your issue, get your APU reballed as soon as possible by a professional technician).

PS5 Boots Into Safe Mode

  • Make sure the BDROM drive is correctly connected and receiving power via the power connector.
  • Make sure the BDROM ribbon cable is correctly connected
  • Make sure the BDROM ribbon cable hasn't been damaged
  • Try rebuilding database and clearing software cache
  • See SU-101312-8 solution

SU-101312-8 Error During Reinstallation

  • Check all solutions from "stuck in safe mode" problem
  • If none of the above solutions work, your BDROM drive is not being recognized by the system and may end up needing your BIOS reprogramming to fool the console into thinking the system is a digital edition console. This will eliminate the BDROM check but it will also turn your console into a digital edition console. See TheCod3r's video @ https://youtu.be/Fy9ES-GHr7U

Console won't reinstall system software

  • See solutions for "stuck in safe mode" and "SU-101312-8 error" first
  • If these solutions do not work, you may need to replace the SSD controller IC (CXD90062GG) (video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAOZA7OIR0Q& - Credit TheCod3r)

Bothhand USA GST5009 short on bottom pins (differential pairs) to ground with 0.04ma-0.12ma current draw from bench supply before dropping to 0ma (12v inject @ PSU connector) - No power at all

  • Shorted CXD90061GG "southbridge" IC. Reflow will not fix this issue. You will need to replace the southbridge. These can be found from AliExpress but the source is questionable. Find a genuine pulled & reballed IC if you can.

3 Beeps of Death (while plugging or after pressing power)

While Plugging: Firmware chip is bad (need to copy data over to new chip or you loose Blu-ray due to serial) ( https://techdevice.repair ) (Type I - Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EHqr39hBZ4&ab_channel=TechDeviceRepair-TDR) (Type II - video https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5CxTff7DgnQ) Credit - TDR (Instructional Video - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/KKBF3FDfEF4 )

After Pressing Power: can be the Firmware chip OR a bad LED flex cable. Credit TDR ( https://techdevice.repair )
