Problem description

On the iPhone 16 Pro, a shorted front camera module causes a complete shutdown of the entire camera subsystem. The result:

  • Front camera not working
  • All rear cameras not working
  • Face ID unavailable

Replacing the front camera resolves the fault.

Unlike older models, the iPhone 16 series allows pairing a used front camera module via Apple Diagnostics via Settings → About → Parts & Service.

Symptoms

  • Front camera black screen
  • All rear cameras black
  • Face ID setup cannot startCamera app lags, freezes, or crashes
  • No visible board damage
  • No signs of liquid on inspection

Solution

Replace the front camera module.

On iPhone 16 Pro:

You CAN pair a used front camera using Apple Diagnostics or USE This Guide and Replace Front Camera Only

Apple now allows pairing a non-original, previously-used camera assembly.

This restores:

  • Camera functionality
  • IR sensors
  • Full Face ID

Diagnostic Steps

1. Test Camera App

  • All lenses show black
  • Cannot switch lens
  • Camera app may force-close → Indicates a shared camera rail/I²C failure.

2. Check Face ID Status

Settings → Face ID & Passcode

  • Shows “Face ID not available”
  • Cannot begin setup

3. Inspect Front Camera Flex

  • Check for tears, liquid ingress, crushed flex
  • Even a visually intact module can be internally shorted

4. Substitute a Known-Good Front Camera (for testing)

Connecting a known-good module:

  • Front + rear cameras initialize
  • Face ID sensors start communicating Even though Face ID will not work with an unpaired module, successful initialization confirms the original module is shorted.

Repair Steps

1. Disassemble the Device

  • Heat and lift display
  • Disconnect battery
  • Access front camera/TrueDepth flex

2. Remove the Faulty Front Camera Module

  • Carefully lift the flex
  • Avoid damage to flood illuminator & dot projector

3. Install Replacement Front Camera

  • Connect used or new module
  • Ensure tight seating and no bent pins

4. Boot Device & Perform Function Tests

Before pairing:

  • Cameras should all open (front may have limitations until paired)
  • Rear camera stabilizers & zooms should work
  • Face ID remains unavailable until pairing

Pairing the Used Front Camera (iPhone 16 Series)

This is the key new step.

How to Pair via Settings (Apple Diagnostics):

  1. Go to Settings → General → About
  2. Tap Parts & Service History
  3. You will see a message showing Camera (or Front Camera) as "Restart & Finish Repair”
  4. Tap into it
  5. Device will restart into diagnostic mode
  6. Follow the prompts
  7. The system will pair the replacement front camera to the logic board

After successful pairing:

  • Face ID becomes available
  • All cameras operate normally
  • No “unable to verify” message remains

5. Final Testing

  • Open Camera → test all lenses
  • Portrait mode, ultra-wide, telephoto
  • Test flashlight (rear camera controller involvement)
  • Test Face ID enrollment
  • Test third-party camera apps

Everything should now function normally.
